2018 Charity

The charity selected for our gala’s support is New Mexico’s Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (NMDHSEM) and local agency partners. Our goal is to provide New Mexico with at least two AKC Pet Disaster Relief (PDR) Trailers. NMDHSEM leads the State’s response to emergencies and disasters while providing for the safety and welfare of its citizens and their animals. Emergencies and disasters can be defined as something caused by natural or human-made events or any other circumstances determined by the Governor. When necessary, the State assists local jurisdictions whose capabilities are overwhelmed, serving as the conduit for assistance from the Federal government.

AKC PDR Trailers

Recent storms, flooding and wildfires across the country have been devastating for area residents and their pets. The American Kennel Club’s AKC Reunite program has donated funds to support the work of shelters and rescues that are saving and reuniting pets with their owners during such disasters.

The Rio Grande Kennel Club, along with AKC Reunite, and other AKC Clubs in New Mexico and around the US, including private organizations and pet lovers are working together to help ensure the safety of our pets during a natural disaster. We are working toward accomplishing this goal by purchasing AKC Pet Disaster Relief (PDR) trailers and donating them to NMDHSEM or local agencies. All sponsorship donations are tax deductible through the AKC Reunite Canine Support and Relief Fund.

AKC PDR trailers come fully stocked with essential supplies to house at least 65 pets during the critical first few days after a disaster is declared. All trailers are equipped with lighting, a generator, and wired for electricity that can run off the generator or a 110 volt power supply. The trailer contains crates, pet carriers, bowls, collars and leashes, microchips, a microchip scanner, fans, cleaning supplies, maintenance equipment, administrative supplies, training materials and much more.

NMDHSEM and local agencies will use the PDR trailers in two different ways:

CO-LOCATION SHELTER
As a Co-Location Shelter, animals and their human companions are housed together, this arrangement is commonly needed during an evacuation due to an approaching hurricane, wildfire or hazmat danger. In these situations, families are responsible for their pets’ general care.

LOST AND FOUND SHELTER
As a Lost and Found Pet Shelter, they provide sheltering and care for pets lost from their families during a disaster. Local Emergency Management and approved volunteers handle general pet care.

About Us

New Mexico Canine Clubs Foundation (NMCCF) is in the process of being established to support and augment the charitable and educational efforts of over 30 American Kennel Club and United Kennel Club affiliated clubs in New Mexico. For it’s 2018 gala, proceeds and donations will be managed by Rio Grande Kennel Club and AKC Reunite Canine Support and Relief Fund.

NMCCF will be an all volunteer New Mexico nonprofit corporation recognized as an US Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) charity. Each year’s charity gala and auction will recognize a club for a historic or meritorious achievement. Each year’s charity gala and auction net proceeds and other donations will be used for a project that advances the human-canine bond in New Mexico.

NMCCF is a new organization but has deep roots in New Mexico. NMCCF was formed by the clubs that host the High Desert Cluster and currently receives financial backing from Rio Grande Kennel Club. American Kennel Club and United Kennel Club affiliated clubs in New Mexico are eligible to become voting members of NMCCF.
